Best Doberman Gear: Collar, Harness, Leash

The short answer: a Doberman's head is narrower than its neck, so the gear has to be fitted differently from most breeds. Get a collar 2.5 in (6.3 cm) wide that sits high and snug — tight enough that it can't be pulled forward over the ears — a leather harness for running, pulling or training, and a 1.2 in (3 cm) wide leather leash with a padded handle. Most adult Dobermans wear a size M or L collar (neck 17.7–21.7 in / 45–55 cm).

Bestia has made leather gear for powerful breeds since 2015, in our workshop in Pazardzhik, Bulgaria. Dobermans are one of the breeds we see most — in our orders and in the photos owners send back. Here's what fits them, and why.

What makes a Doberman different

🔸 Narrow head, strong neck. A Doberman's wedge-shaped head is slimmer than its neck — the opposite of most breeds. A collar fitted loosely can slide over the ears the moment the dog plants its feet and backs up.
🔸 Fast, lean and strong. An adult Doberman weighs 66–99 lb (30–45 kg), nearly all muscle. A narrow strap focuses that pull on a thin line across the throat; a wide one spreads it out.
🔸 A short, fine coat. There's almost no undercoat to cushion hardware, so rough edges and stiff webbing rub fast. Padded leather is kinder on this coat.

The collar: wide, padded, fitted high

How to measure: wrap a soft tape around the neck where the collar will sit — up high, just behind the jaw — snug but not tight. Most adult Dobermans measure 17.7–21.7 in (45–55 cm). In our sizing:

🔸 M — neck 16.7–20.6 in (42.5–52.5 cm) — most females and lighter males
🔸 L — neck 19.7–23.6 in (50–60 cm) — most adult males
🔸 Puppy? Size for the neck they have today and move up as they grow; a young Dobie in a loose collar learns to back out of it.

The Doberman fit test: you should be able to slide two fingers flat under the fastened collar — but you should not be able to pull it forward over the ears. If it clears the ears, it's too loose for this breed.

The harness: for running, pulling and training

For calm walks, a fitted wide collar is enough. For jogging, bike-side running, sport training or a dog that pulls hard, a harness moves the load onto the chest and takes the neck out of it entirely — and a Doberman's deep chest carries a harness well.

Measure the chest at its deepest point, just behind the front legs, then pick by the measurement:

🔸 M — chest 19.7–29.5 in (50–75 cm)
🔸 L/XL — chest 23.6–45.3 in (60–115 cm)
The two sizes overlap between 23.6 and 29.5 in. If your dog measures in that range, send us the measurement and we'll tell you which one sits better.

The "Hektor" Harness

4 mm (0.16 in) belt leather built for hard pullers, with two chest straps for a stable fit. Matches the "Hektor" collar and leash.

The "Eros" Harness

The leash: short, wide, padded

For a strong, fast dog, a leather leash around 3 ft (90 cm–1 m) long and 1.2 in (3 cm) wide gives you close control without wrapping it around your hand.

🔸 The all-black "Eros" Leash — 35.5 in (90 cm) long, 1.2 in (3 cm) wide, leather-padded handle
🔸 The "Hektor" Leash — 39.4 in (1 m) long, 1.2 in (3 cm) wide, soft leather with a tear-resistant inner layer

Or get the whole set

The "Eros" BIG dog set puts a matching harness, collar and leash in one order, in sizes M, L and XL — the simplest way to kit out a Doberman in one go.

FAQ

What size collar does a Doberman need?
Measure the neck high up, just behind the jaw. Most adult Dobermans measure 17.7–21.7 in (45–55 cm): usually size M (16.7–20.6 in) for females and lighter males and L (19.7–23.6 in) for most adult males.

What width of collar is best for a Doberman?
About 2.5 in (6.3 cm) for adults. A wide, padded collar spreads the dog's pull across the neck instead of concentrating it on the throat, and is gentler on the short coat.

Can a Doberman slip out of its collar?
Yes — more easily than most breeds, because the head is narrower than the neck. Fit the collar high and snug: two flat fingers of room, but it must not pull forward over the ears.

Should a Doberman wear a harness or a collar?
Both, for different jobs: a fitted wide collar for everyday walks and ID tags, a leather harness for running, pulling or training, where the load belongs on the chest.

What size harness does a Doberman need?
Measure the chest at its deepest point, just behind the front legs. Our M fits chests of 19.7–29.5 in (50–75 cm) and L/XL fits 23.6–45.3 in (60–115 cm). In the overlap, send us the measurement and we'll recommend one.

What leash is best for a Doberman?
A leather leash around 3 ft (90 cm–1 m) long and 1.2 in (3 cm) wide, ideally with a padded handle — long enough for a relaxed walk, short enough for close control of a strong, fast dog.
